Make a Gift to the Department of Materials Science and Engineering
Established in 1868 as the College of Mining, the Department of Materials Science and Engineering is UC Berkeley’s oldest engineering department and has been educating some of the world’s best engineers for nearly 150 years.
Central to our long tradition of academic excellence is the pioneering research conducted by our dedicated faculty members. Perhaps the ultimate beneficiaries of our research enterprise are our talented students. Working closely with their instructors, who often serve as mentors as well, they have a unique opportunity to apply knowledge learned in courses within a research context.
The landmark building that houses our department, the Hearst Memorial Mining Building, was made possible by a contribution from philanthropist Phoebe Apperson Hearst more than one hundred years ago. Today, gifts from friends of the department continue to play a vital role in our success. We welcome – and appreciate – your generous support.
