In situ transmission electron microscopy reveals a large melting point hysteresis for Ge nanocrystals embedded in silica. The center point of the hysteresis loop nearly coincides with the bulk melting point of Ge. This extremely unusual behavior is argued to be a natural result of the kinetics of melting and solidification.
