Title:Transition metal oxides - electronic and structural correlations on the nanoscale
Abstract: Many materials exhibit inhomogeneities due to domain formation as a results of competition between short-range ordering forces between atoms and molecules and long-range interactions associated with magnetic or electric polarization or strain. Especially in strongly correlated electron materials interaction of spin, charge, orbital, or superconducting order give rise to complex and yet poorly understood materials properties. I will discuss recent examples from our group where we have probed the domain formation and ordering on nanometer length scales in important classes of materials combining optical spectroscopy with scanning probe microscopy: Using optical second-harmonic generation we accessed the surface topology of the ferroic order in the intrinsic multiferroic material YMnO3. By infrared probing the domain formation associated with the metal-to-insulator transition in VO2 provides insight into the effect of external stress on the phase behavior. The expansion of tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy probing optical phonons allows for optical nano-crystallography as used for the study of finite-size effects on the ferroelectric order in BaTiO3 nanocrystals.
