Hearst memorial Mining Building faces South

A night shot of the building all lit up and reflected in the Mining Circle pool. The reflecting pool will be restored after the rebuilding of Stanley Hall that is adjacent to Hearst Memorial Mining Building.

The West side of the building faces the Bay and San Francisco

A rare night view of San Francisco across the Bay. Usually the city is enveloped in the fog that it is famous for. Often the fog travels as far as Berkeley but burns off as the days heat up to very pleasent temperatures both in the Summer and the Winter

The view from Hearst Memorial Mining Building shows the Bay Bridge which connects Oakland to San Francisco which you can see in the background

The Hearst Memorial Mining Building Lobby spans three floors. The chandeliers hang from the center of the skylight domes.

The delicate ironwork of the railing and the arched columns in contrast to the earthy brickwork laid by Rafael Guastavino and his son combine with the natural light that floods the entire lobby to render a unique and spectacular spatial quality.

The walkway on the top floor of the lobby shows the back side of the arches and the gently curved ceiling which adds to the elements that lead the eye up to the skylights

The arched columns flare towards the central skylight as they frame the door to a storage room on the top floor. The chain is anchored through the center of the skylight holding one of the three chandeliers

Behind these windows is the staircase leading down to the third floor as seen from the fourth floor.

The same staircase from the third to the fourth floor as seen from the third level.

Above the entrance are the words Mining and Metallurgy

The front entrance. The doors are 12 feet high, flanked by columns and narrow windows above a massive granite staircase and crowned by the arched window

The inside view of the front entrance flanked by the narrow columns of windows. Note that the arched window is on the next floor up

On either side of the front door are massive windows that are replicas in weight and visual effect to the entrance. The rectangle under the window is another window on the first floor where the building's laboratories are located

The inside view of the window depicted in the photo to the left. The morning sunshine streams through the glass onto the brick and marble floor. An unequaled quality of the Hearst Memoral Mining Building is the architect's use of natural daylight to illuminate almost every part of the inside of the building
