The CONCEPT Group,
advised by R. Ramesh, is primarily concerned with the study of complex oxide thin film systems. Current studies focus on the correlation between electric and magnetic properties in various complex oxide systems. These correlated systems are investigated in two ways, by exploring the effects of electric and magnetic stimuli on the properties of single phase multiferroic materials (e.g. BiFeO3) and of two-phase nanostructured magnetoelectric materials (e.g. BiFeO3-CoFe2O4). Expertise includes thin-film production of thin films via pulsed laser deposition, sputtering, and chemical vapor deposition in addition to materials characterization via SQUID, scanning probe microscopy (AFM, MFM, PFM, NSOM), x-ray diffraction, electronic probe, and synchrotron analysis (PEEM, XMCD, XMLD). The goals of the group center around understanding material properties at a fundamental level and applying such properties to novel device applications.
