Droplet-Based Microfluidic System for Monodispersed Nanoparticle and Nanostructure Synthesis

The goal of this project is to design a microfluidic reactor to synthesize monodisperse nanoparticles. The microreactor is designed to achieve monodispersity by having thermally isolated heated zones for nucleation and growth processes and incorporating a two phase flow system to assure uniform reaction conditions. Our reactor is fabricated in silicon and it is capable of handling high temperatures and high pressures. Our current focus is synthesizing magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles inside this reactor. We have demonstrated magnetite and maghemite nanoparticle syntheses in our first generation device.
